Natural relief: home remedies for bronchitis

Bronchitis can be quite persistent. Constant coughing robs you of sleep and is often accompanied by a stuffy nose. Gentle relief is needed. And, as is so often the case in life, you can fall back on grandma's experience and advice: these tried-and-tested, natural home remedies can support the body when suffering from bronchitis.
Initially dry and scratchy, it can later develop into a cough with phlegm – bronchitis often brings with it a veritable “coughing concert.” Bronchitis is caused by inflammation of the mucous membranes in the bronchi, which impairs the function of the so-called cilia. This significantly slows down or even completely prevents the removal of mucus and pathogens. The result: more mucus is produced, which accumulates and triggers the urge to cough. But how do you get rid of it? Of course, there is no miracle cure. Nevertheless, the following home remedies can be a valuable aid in treating and alleviating the symptoms.
Drink plenty of fluids
First things first: drink, drink, drink. This helps to moisten the mucous membranes – at the same time, drinking plenty of fluids can loosen the mucus, making it easier to cough up. Still water and unsweetened teas are best suited for this. Certain herbal teas are considered particularly beneficial home remedies for bronchitis due to the medicinal plants they contain. Herbal cough remedies, such as Prospan with its special ivy extract EA 575, also provide relief for colds with coughs and acute bronchitis.
Inhalation
It couldn't be easier – this home remedy for bronchitis doesn't require much: just a bowl of hot water and a towel. The steam is inhaled deep into the airways, helping to moisturize them, loosen mucus, and clear the bronchial tubes. To enhance the effect, cover your head with a towel so that the steam does not escape. Breathe in and out deeply for 10 to 15 minutes and repeat once or twice a day as needed.
Warm compresses and chest wraps
Heat can be particularly beneficial for bronchitis: it stimulates blood circulation and loosens stubborn coughs. The simplest option is to place a warm cherry pit pillow or hot water bottle on your chest or upper back. Chest compresses have also proven to be an effective home remedy for coughs and bronchitis. To do this, soak a cloth in hot water, wring it out slightly, and then place it on your chest. Wrap another dry cloth over it to retain the heat for longer. Then relax – after 20 to 30 minutes, the chest compress can be removed.
Chest rubs
A classic home remedy for bronchitis and colds is chest rubbing. Special ointments or oils, often containing eucalyptus ingredients, are gently massaged into the chest or upper back. This is said to promote blood circulation and soothe the respiratory tract, which can provide relief from symptoms, especially at night.
